About the Kalamazoo Writing Circle
The Kalamazoo Writing Circle is a small community organization of local, Kalamazoo writers that meets weekly to discuss workshop one another's writing. Our members have a variety of writing experience and backgrounds, with some still waiting to debut and others being published multiple times.
Our members also specialize in a variety of forms, such as:
- Fiction
- Memoir & Personal Essay
- Poetry
- Playwriting
As of August 2026, the KWC is formally pursuing 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, which will be essential as we grow and distribute our upcoming anthology: Monsters & Humans. With the money earned from selling this anthology, we aim to keep furthering the literary arts of Kalamazoo and living out our mission: To empower writers to do what they love.
Our History
Established in the spring of 2023, the KWC began as a group of five friends and English majors who wanted to continue their writing education after graduation. As an informal group of friends, meetings were held at Western Michigan University's Writing Center and Western View Clubhouse.
By the fall of 2023, the founding members all agreed that it was time to grow. So, the group meetings moved to This is a Bookstore, where the members voted to formalize their group under the name Kalamazoo Writing Circle. From there, the KWC finally opened up membership to the Kalamazoo community, allowing anyone to join. Finally, in the winter of 2024, found its final home at Kazoo Books, where weekly meetings are still hosted to this day.
Our Future
In the fall of 2025, the KWC began its most ambitious project to date: The 2026 Anthology Project. Eager to improve our writers' skills and give back to the Kalamazoo community, the KWC began fundraising by selling used books at the Kalamazoo Farmer's Market. The anthology is set to be released in the fall of 2026.
Moving forward, the KWC has shifted its goal from serving its own members to serving Kalamazoo at large. To that end, the KWC is currently pursuing 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
