Anthology 2026: Monsters & Humans

Coming Fall 2026

Thirteen Local Writers. One Universal Theme.

Thirteen Kalamazoo writers come together to tackle one timeless question: what makes a monster?

In this debut anthology from the Kalamazoo Writing Circle, you’ll find works of fact, fiction, and something in between:

  • A hack journalist interviews a monstrous ballerina.
  • A vampiric homebody explores her aversion to blood.
  • A young woman recounts her true encounter with a killer.
  • A grieving twin swears she transformed into a deer.
  • And more…

From thrilling to cozy, to thoughtful, to lighthearted, the stories in this book explore encounters with the Other—and what it means to be othered.

About Monsters & Humans

Monsters & Humans is the Kalamazoo Writing Circle's debut publication, featuring work from 13 local writers. But really, this piece is the result of a greater effort from the Kalamazoo community, itself:

  • All pieces are written, workshopped, and edited by local KWC members
  • Design and printing by WMU's graphic design program and their community connections
  • Cover art contributed by a local Kalamazoo artist, Felix Sunflower
  • Funding sourced from book sales and donations received at the Kalamazoo Farmer's Market

For us, Monsters & Humans is more than just our offering to the Kalamazoo community. Instead, it is a tangible piece of Kalamazoo's spirit.
